Academic
Background:
He
entered the Physics degree of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of
Porto (FCUP), Portugal, in the 1994/95 school year, and 2 years later
changed to the Optoelectronics and Lasers degree of the same faculty.
He
finished is degree in Optoelectronics and Lasers, in September 1998, with a
final average of 16 (out of 20). In the final year project he worked
experimentally in the field of optical fibre amplifiers.
He started is M.Sc. in Optoelectronics and Lasers, in the
FCUP, in the 1998/99 school year, and finished the first year (lectures)
with a final average of 17 (out of 20).
He
finished is M.Sc. in June of 2001, with a final grade of Very Good.
Professors Oleg Okhotnikov and Manuel Joaquim Marques supervised his
experimental work, entitled “Frequency-Shifted-Feedback Fibre Lasers”.
He
started is Ph.D. program, in the field of optical fibre communications, in
July 2001, with the supervision of Professor Manuel Joaquim Marques. That
Ph.D. program was undertaken in the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems
Unit of INESC-PORTO, and in the Optoelectronics Research Center (ORC) of the
Technical University of Tampere, in Finland, where he worked under the
supervision of Professor Oleg Okhotnikov. His Ph.D. thesis, entitled
"Optical Fiber Lasers and Amplifiers" was unanimously approved by the jury,
on the 20th of December 2005.

Awards
He
received the “Eng. António de Almeida” award, given by the Eng. António de
Almeida Foundation, to the best student of his course, in the final year of
the degree.
3.
Professional activities:
During
the 1999/2000 school year, and during the first semester of the 2000/2001
and 2001/2002 school years, he was employed as monitor in the Physics
Department of FCUP, where he taught the following courses: Physics
Laboratory for Chemistry I, Physics Laboratory for Physics III, Physics
Laboratory for Astronomy III, Physics Laboratory for Physics and Chemistry
Teaching I, Optoelectronics Laboratory II and Optics II.
From
March 2004 to March 2006 he was an Invited Teaching Assistant, in the Physics
Department of the University of Madeira, where he taught the following
courses: General Physics (Exercise and Laboratory
classes) for the Biology and Biochemistry degrees, General Physics I
(Laboratory classes) for the Civil Engineering and Chemistry degrees and
Physics and Circuits Laboratories (Laboratory classes) for the
Telecommunications and Networks Engineering and Computer Engineering
degrees.
From
March 2006 to March 2007 he was an Invited Assistant Professor, in the Physics
Department of the University of Madeira, where he taught the following
courses: Themodynamics, for the Civil Engineering degrees and
Optics for the Astronomy and Chemistry degrees.
Since March 2007 he
is an Assistant Professor, in the Mathematics and Engineering Department of the
University of Madeira, where he teaches the following courses:
Digital Systems, and Measurements and Instrumentation.
4.
Scientific Activities
He has
been working, since January of 1999, in the Optoelectronics and Electronic
Systems Unit of INESC-PORTO, and has been involved in several projects, e.g.
the HIPOWER project (P014-P31B-09/96) and the DWIDE.COM project.
His
field of expertise are optical fibre sources, but he has basic knowledge in
several other areas, e.g. optical fibre sensors, instrumentation, and
computer simulation.
His
present day interests are connected with the development of optical fibre
lasers, capable of producing short and ultra-short pulses, and optical fibre
amplifiers, in the 1mm
wavelength range, for use in Medical and Biological systems.

Pedagogic activities
He prepared and presented two
session of the recycling course “The Oscilloscope in the Classroom”, for
about 80 teachers of several Secondary Schools of Madeira. These
sessions, 8 hours each, took place in the Physics Department of the
University of Madeira from January 2005 to February 2007.
He prepared and presented two
demonstration sessions with Physics experiments to 3rd and
secondary level teachers, in the 3rd Regional Physics,
Mathematics and Technologies Teachers Meeting, in Porto Santo, from the 21st
to the 23rd of April 2005.
He prepared and presented, together
with Dr. Pedro Almeida, two demonstration sessions with simple Physics
experiments, entitled “The Brave New World of Physics”, for student of
several Secondary schools of Madeira. These sessions took part in the
Regional Public Library in Funchal, on the 19th of March and the
3rd of June 2005.
